Android users rejoice, iPhone users avoid

When we first heard about the AirPo&#;, er, FreeBud 3s, we were tyst sceptical – noise-cancelling without an in-ear bud or over-ear fit? Surely not!

Huawei is clearly fearless when it comes to hardware though. While manufacturers like Apple and Google bide their time and launch new tech once it&#;s failed a few times first, we have to give the politically precarious tech giant credit – it innovates, hard.

The FreeBuds 3, Huawei&#;s third generation of AirPod rivals, are the world&#;s first active open-fit noise-cancelling earbuds. They also promise high-quality audio and zippy charging, attempting to carve out a niche between buds like the Sony WFMX3 and Libratone Track Air+, and the ubiquitous AirPods and AirPod Pros. But do they deliver on these lofty promises?

    Design and build: Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V

We know we&#;ve hammered this drum already but the design of the FreeBuds is mega AirPoddy, with an earbud component and appended stalks that hang down from your ears.

The FreeBuds are a bit larger than AirPods but don&#;t look bulky in the slightest and the polished plastic finish feels prem

The Freebuds 3 are Huawei’s third-gen true wireless earbuds and the world’s first open-fit versions to have active noise cancelling.

Others, such as Sony’s WFXM3 and Apple’s AirPods Pro, use silicone tips for an airtight seal, and so aren’t an open design.

This review was originally written in October just before they launched, but since then a fetching red version has launched and the price has dropped dramatically.

    Freebuds 3: Price & availability

You can buy the Freebuds 3 from Amazon for £, though the white version is a few pounds more expensive than red and black.

However, you can get the Freebuds 3 for free if you pre-order a Huawei P40 phone.

The new, lower price is a third less than the £ RRP which already undercut the AirPods 2, which cost £ from Apple with the wireless charging case, although you can find them for  under £ from Amazon.

Of course, the Freebuds have a few advantages over the AirPods, including that active noise cancelling )(ANC).

In the intervening months since the Freebuds 3 launched, Apple released the AirPods Pro with ANC, but these are even more expensive a

Since the Huawei FreeBuds 3 were announced, complete with an AirPod-a-like look and feel, Apple has launched the AirPods Pro, its own take on noise-cancelling earbuds. Interestingly, Huawei's latest true wireless earbuds are more faithful to Apple's original formula than the Pros, though.

The FreeBuds sport an open-ear fit; in other words, nothing jams right in your ear. Instead, they sit relatively superficially. In fact, the Freebuds are the first in the world to combine an open fit with active noise canceling (ANC), as the two features are somewhat contradictory.

Meanwhile, the AirPod Pros are more traditional, Sony WXM3-esque ANC buds, complete with a squishy in-ear sound seal for a more invasive, but also more sound-isolating bud.

So what's Huawei playing at? Out of the gate, its open-fit bud is on the back foot with no passive noise cancellation; and at £ (about AU$ based on current conversion rates), they're not exactly cheap. While they're not currently available in the US, that works out at around $ – it's possible this could change in the future, though.

All true, but for anyone who actually likes how superficial the original AirPo
